winds of change

nba draft 2006

Last night’s game was probably the most intense game I’ve ever coached. It was the most exciting game to be a part of, a real nail biter. The out come however didn’t settle in until I made it home and realized that we won 14 – 6. Three games into the season and we finally see our first win. I find it ironic that the NFL Dolphins are also 1-3. Maybe there’s a connection who knows, all I know is that we’ve finally won one.

The Broncos wanted this win just as bad as we did. We are the only team that they’ve beaten thus far and they were expecting victory again. In the first half one player on defense got out of position and they scored, but once that error was corrected they scored no more.

My most proud moment was when the Broncos were one foot away from scoring again after an interception. It looked very bad but then our defense just stepped it up and shut them down. I was never more proud of them as I was at that moment.

Although the offense was not as impressive, I am still very proud of them. The QBs only threw two interceptions and both times the offense recovered to make the stop. The offense is still not comfortable with the offensive plays, but they still showed signs of improvement from the week before. Once they get it together it will be bad news for the opposing teams.

The first half the Broncos scored 6, in the second half our offense scored 6 which lead us to what almost seemed like the never ending overtime, this is when the tension began.

Maybe it was nervousness, but the offense made a lot of errors, then the Broncos got the ball and the defense shut them down. This scene repeated two more times, on the forth possession the offense got it together, scored and made the two point conversion. The defense shut them down again and that was it, our first victory. I’m still on cloud nine.

Our first victory; one small step for man, one giant leap for the Blanchard Park Dolphins. Although the victory was sweet I had to bring them down to reality afterwords. After the game I told them that we shouldn’t have gone into over time and that we still have a lot of work to do. Last night the defense won the game, but offense should have been the exclamation point. I know they will get there, it's just a matter of time.

Next week is going to be a rough one. My assistant coach will be out of town so I will be back on offense while a substitute will cover the defense in my place. This may be a good thing because my assistant coach and I have two different ways of approaching offense maybe I can find a way to get them to correct their mistakes. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t have any concerns though.

I have not ran the offense since the first half of the Bucs game so this week the kids will have to get use to me running the show for one game. My other concern is that I have worked hard on that defense so the idea of handing them over to someone else is a little hard, but the substitute coach I've chosen has proved to me that he knows football. Defense should be fine and may even improve.

Next week we face the Redskins and I believe that the outcome will be the same as last night’s game, hopefully with less errors. Until next week, see ya!
