Flag Football part 6

Welcome to another blog of coaching flag football. This past weekend the Chiefs played the Eagles and won 32 - 20. It was the ugliest victory probably in the history of flag football, but I guess a win is a win; or is it?
I believe that our last possession had to be the lowest point in any football league's history. The first play I called ran good and we made it almost to the half way mark thanks to our most improved player, this had us at 2nd down. Throughout the game my kids where hustling for flags on defense and a lot of times would end up eating dirt. There must have been a lot of ant piles on the field because during our next play, kids were moving around on the line as if they had ants in their pants. The refs blew the whistle and we lost yards for offsides, 3rd down. Ants in the pants must really be hard to resolve on the fly because the same thing happened again. We lost more yards, 4th down. By now we are back around the 15th yard line, which totally canceled out the good run that was done earlier, and we had 3 seconds left in the game. I called time out to regroup and come up with a play that can get us a touch down.
There has always been great mysteries throughout time. Mysteries such as, the identity of Jack the Ripper, who built Stonehenge and why?, is there life on other planets? and were is Jimmy Hoffa? But all mysteries pale in comparison to the mystery that took place on Sat morning October 28, 2006 during the last play of the game.
With 3 seconds left I called a play, the ball is hiked, the runner receives the ball and runs. The runner cuts left, then cuts right and cuts left again; and then stops. Everyone on the field freezes in their tracks. The Eagle's coach and I look at the refs as if to say 'what happened?', both the offense and defense are scratching their heads while looking around, and the refs are looking back at me as if to say 'What happened?'. I look down at the runner and he still has the ball in his hands and both flags still attached to his hips. Why did he stop running?, I have no idea, but at that moment the scene turned into the Chiefs vs the Eagle's rendition of Forrest Gump as I began to yell 'RUN JORDAN RUN!' But unlike Forrest Gump in the movie, Little Jordan didn't run. Instead he just started explaining, 'But I thought...' and it was then that an Eagle defender, the only girl on their team who is standing next to him, saw me standing there in anguish, showed pity on me and calmly pulled his flag. The whistle blew and the game was finally and officially over. Thank you little Eagle girl, thank you.
Yeah we won, but it's really hard for me to claim this win as a true victory due to all the errors we made during the game. I think I know why these mistakes happened because I saw a glimpse of this in our game the previous week. The last time we played a good game was against the Steelers and that was because the Steelers forced us to play hard from beginning to end. It seems that when we are 2 touchdowns ahead my kids begin to get too relaxed, thus errors are made that could have been prevented. This attitude is one of the reasons I chose to get more serious with the kids. This is something I will bring to their attention at next practice and hopefully we''ll make the right ajustments for our next games.
Well, from this point on we face an uphill battle. The last two games of the season are against two teams that are no strangers to winning. After that we play in the 1st rounds of the playoffs, then we move on to the second round which more than likely will be against the Panthers who are still undefeated. If we play and beat the Panthers, we more than likely will play the Colts in the championships, they're also undefeated. If we were playing either the Colts or the Panthers this last game, we would have lost for sure with all those mistakes made. I believe that my kids can beat both those team, but I gotta get them to their full potential by the time the playoffs come around. Till next time, see ya.
