Coaching Flag Football - Season 2, Finally

Well folks I'm sorry that I haven't written in a bit but you know how life goes sometimes. I'll do my best to get you up to speed on everything.
The season is over and the mighty chiefs ended with a record of 4-3. In our last game of the season we beat the Rams 26-20 which was our best game all season long.
During that game our passing game shined like never before and I was very proud of our boys. The only complaint we had was with the bad official. During one of the plays he was actually on the cell phone in the middle of the field! Can you believe that? Both teams got away with murder because he simply never positioned himself to see all the action. Well with that game behind us and a good victory we marched into the playoffs.
We played the Seahawks in the first round and the first half was tough ending with both teams not scoring but in the second half we self destructed and the Seahawks beat us 26 - 6. It was a very hard loss because everyone believed we had a chance until our defense made one mistake. From there it was all Seahawks.
This season I learned a few things about coaching. The first thing I learned is not to build up any game. You can't put a lot of pressure on 6-8 year olds, they can't handle it. It backfired on us for both the Redskins game and the Eagles.
The second thing I learned is to limit the plays. I think my biggest flaw this season was expecting the kids to learn 10 plays. Next season I'm only bringing 4 plays to the table.
The third thing I learned is that I need to teach my kids discipline. Without discipline the kids cannot improve throughout the season. This season another one of our downfalls was the lack of discipline, because of that the Chiefs didn’t start improving until it was too late. Next season I will not make that mistake.
The last thing I learned is to have us as a work in progress throughout the season in order to prepare for the playoffs. Have a plan at the beginning and perfect it all season long. That's what Parker did with the Seahawks.
Now some of you might be thinking, “What about having fun?” having fun is still a top priority, but I realized that the kids have lots of fun during the games when they run the plays correctly. I also give them time to unwind before practice, and a break during practice. It’s not fun to lose and when we do lose I can’t tell them anything to change that (believe me I’ve tried). Next season 4 of my kids will return and I’m more determined to make sure that they leave the season with a championship.
I want to take this time to thank all the parents on my team for all there support and encouragement. Without great parents on your team you'll have a long season. For those of you that return, I look forward to once again serving you and your kids.
Assistant coach Mike (aka, the defensive mad scientist) is moving on as his kid moves on to play tackle in the fall, I wish you both the best of luck and hopefully well play on the same team again in the future.
Before you know it the fall season will be here and we'll be in full swing again. The Steelers will return and I will not be taking them lightly. Next season, I want to win it all, but most importantly I want to pass the first rounds of the playoffs. Thank you all for tagging along with my quest to become the Don Shula of Flag Football. If you live in the Orlando area and want to have your child involved, simply go to www.nflflagfootball.net early registration will be $55.00, if you wait until the fall to sign up it will be $75.00. Until Next season, love, peace and a lot of hair grease!

This was a great article Mike. I coach for another league in Queens and I can truly relate to all that you've said. Keep up the good work. DaveG on 5/17/2007 11:57:09 AM
