Was Billy Donovan the Right Choice?

Well it looks like it’s a done deal. Welcome to Orlando Billy Donovan! I honestly believed that Stan Van Gundy would have been a better choice, but I also understand the benefits of the Magic’s decision.
With all the hype Billy D. brings to the Magic, the city will more then likely approve the new arena, more Magic games will be sold out, and the city of Orlando is excited about basketball once again. It’s all good and all, but in the back of my mind I can’t help but ask, “was he the best choice?”
The Magic say that they want to bring a championship to Orlando ASAP, but they keep making choices that say they want to bring a championship to Orlando someday. What the Magic needed was a coach with a proven track record who would lead the Magic to post season greatness instead they take another risk by selecting a rookie coach. It's a risk that will either grant Otis Smith GM of the year honors, or backfire to the point of a Magic fan starting the "www.fireotissmith.org" site.
History will dictate that the odds of Donovan being successful are not favorable. If three of my fingers got cut off I’d still be able to count the number of successful coaches that made the jump from college to the pros. It's clear that when the Magic was looking at all options, history was not on the advisory committee.
There’s a reason why Germany won’t try to take over the world again, there’s a reason why the south won’t raise against the north again, there's a reason why Johnny Davis may never be a head coach again and there’s a reason why Japan won’t attack America again; and the reason is history.
God will not place the tree with forbidden fruit on the earth again because he knows that even if he cracks the sky open to reveal himself and tells the whole world not to partake of the fruit, someone sooner or later will take a bite. You don’t even have to be all knowing to know that, because history tells us so.
Now don't get me wrong. I don’t think the choice to select Donovan is all bad, there are some factors here that I think will be to Donovan’s benefit and can lead to the Magic having a successful season this fall.
The main benefit is the fact that the Magic is a young team devoid of Primo Donna superstars. This team is still a teachable team and the star of the team (Dwight Howard) is still very humble. This will make Donovan's job much easier.
Another benefit is the fact that the Magic will have much cap space this off season which gives the Magic a lot of option to mold the team the way Donovan wants it.
If this were the Heat, Pistons, Rockets or Spurs, Donovan might have a respect issue at first, but with the Magic that won’t be the case.
Weather or not Billy Donovan is successful truly is anyone’s guess, but time has a way of always answering such questions. I hope I'm proven wrong but history is against Donovan in this case but if Larry Brown can do it, why not Billy Donovan. This season we will all watch with excitement, and expectancy. Until next time, see ya!
