Wow! I can't believe another Season of NFL Flag Football is here! I intended to start blogging last week when we started practice but I've been so busy lately it's been crazy. This season is going to be a very emotional season for me. The Steelers are back, I still have not beaten coach Parker, and this might be my last season coaching.
I'm also very excited because this season's team is the most talented by far! 5 of the kids from my previous two seasons have returned and they all have stepped up as far as skills goes. And most of our new players are not bad themselves. I truly love this team because almost everyone is quick and knows how to run with the ball. This will be a serious season for us.
I know I've said this before but I truly believe that we can win it all. A couple of weeks ago I helped out in our Punt, Pass, and Kick event and I got to see almost all the talent in the league. I know for a fact that my team is one of the better talented ones out there. But this season, I'm not taking any team for granted.
Not only are the Steelers back, but we play them first this Saturday! The Steelers have some talent on their team this season, in fact; one of my best players from last season is on that team. The reason he's with them is because they practice closer to his house, plus he's loyal to the coach.
Last Saturday we scrimmaged against the Jets and we can't sleep on them either. They have one of my best players from my first season, including his little brother who is not bad either. They also have a kid who came to our practice by mistake at first and he is very good too.
And who can forget about coach Parker? Once again Parker has done it again! Somehow he always manages to get that one kid who can be a difference maker in the game. Although the weapon known as Denzel is not in the league this season, it looks like Parker has found a suitable replacement. We play against him and his Redskins the following week. This season he must go down!
With a new season comes new experiences. This season we are no longer the Chiefs, we are the 49ers. I no longer have the “Mad Scientist of Defense” as my assistant coach and the new defensive coach I have is more laid back then me which has made me the more stern one this season. We also have a second assistant coach (unoffically) which makes practices a whole lot easier.
For the first time in my coaching tenure I had to get on the kids for not taking practice seriously (this use to be the other coach's department). It is an area that I don't like to go to but when you've been going over the same plays for two weeks and they can't remember one play, then things need to be shaken up. The sad thing is that this team is so talented that they can probably win some games on skills alone, which is why I have to be hard on them because if we can pull it off as a team we truly can be unstoppable.
The Championships is the only goal this season. It's now that I realize that the only way to reach that goal is to look at this team as a work in progress throughout the season. I've learned from past mistakes and I'm more determined to win this season. I owe it to those kids who have been loyal to me.
Well folks, we're back in the swing of things and hopefully this weekend we can get this season off to a good start. As I continue on my quest of becoming the Don Shula of flag football, I find myself asking this one question: "Was Don Shula coaching the Dolphins when they had an undefeated season?" Hmmm. Until next week, see ya!
