Coaching Flag Football Spring 2008 - Part 6

The Eagles faced their first defeat this week at the hands of the 49ers. The score was 6 – 20 leaving us a record of 1-1.
This loss didn't leave much of a sting as there was a lot of things that contributed to the loss, and most of which I do not regret. I started the first half by experimenting with the rotation and having kids playing all different positions. Although I played to win, I didn't keep my best players (or my best group of players) out there most of the time during the first half. If I had done that we would have more than likely won the game, or at the very least lost by one touchdown instead. However that does not take away for the excellent coaching that I expected from the 49ers' coaches.
After the first half it was clear that we needed to go back to what we had going last week, and it really pains me to do that after telling the kids that we will have them on both offense and defense the remainder of the season.
This season the rotation is my biggest problem. My two best safeties are on offense! The offense is not much of a concern but the defense is a real problem. With a few modifications it can get there.
I think I have an idea which I will try this coming week as my son seems to have become a well rounded player able to do both side with no problem and really doesn't care. If I can have him become a good safety and train one other that is already on the defense to play safety as well, then we will be all set.
Two more changes on the team will happen this week. One of the changes will be the swapping of my offensive center with one of my defensive centers. The reason for this change is because the offensive center (OC) is very good at the defensive center (DC) position, has had a hard time catching the ball, plus he shows enthusiasm for the position. The one DC I'm switching is slow which causes a breakdown on the defense, plus he wants to be on offense and can catch the ball with less problems.
Another possible change will be moving one of my defensive pass rushers to offense. This kid has decent speed and can catch the ball fairly well. I think he will excel in the TE position.
Having the kids playing their best positions will make or break this team in the playoffs which is why I am placing so much time into this matter now. Rotation and best positions for the kids this week and next will be my main focuses. This season, I am well pleased with the kids I have and if I can get them to take practice more seriously, we will be a threat to any team in the league. Until next time, see ya!

tough break coach. This season seems so serious, why don't you go back to that fun loving coach you use to be? D-Wade Fan on 3/11/2008 10:05:29 PM
I guess the reason why I seem more serious this season is because this is truly the most talented team I've ever coached and therefore I believe that we can go all the way and win it all. I just want to make sure that I do everything in my power to get them there. Rockness on 3/12/2008 10:13:22 PM
