Hi everyone. I have something to say; I think it's best if you sit down for this one, maybe even have a glass of water and some tissues near by. Okay, here it goes... The Mighty Chiefs fell at the hands of the Redskins today 26 - 38. It was a tough loss to swallow. Could we have won the game? I truly believe so, but today simply was not our day.
Unlike the last game, our kids played well, it was just that the Redskins had a strategy that worked well against our style of play. It seems that the word is out and that everyone is aware of the Chiefs being 'Interception Dragons' because in our last three games the opposition did very little passing or a lot of option plays. Our kids kept getting sucked into their trick plays and it was very hard for our kids to stop their offense today. Offensively I could have chosen some better plays on some possessions and we probably could have put more pressure on them defensively. We did however learn something positive with this loss. After the game I told the kids that if they can tell me what went wrong with this game that I would accept this loss because if we can learn from our flaws, then we will become a better team. We talked for a few minutes and I believe that everyone learned something which made me happy. We also learned something big; we don't like losing.
When we lost the first time we didn't take it so badly because we only had one practice due to communication issues at the time and it was my first game coaching. We took that loss as lesson learned and that they had more time to practice then we did. This loss left a little sting and I like that becuase character can be built in these situations. During the game the kids began to do what teams usually do when they are losing and that is argue with each other when someone messes up. My assistant coach and I brought this to their attention after the game and I believe they understood.
It seems that the eastern conference of our division has tougher teams and next week's game won't be easier. After our game I stuck around and watched the first half of the Colts vs Packers game and I must say that I'm glad I did. Watching that game is gonna help me prepare for next week.
Next week we play the Packers and after today's game, I hope the Packers put in some extra practice this week, because today the Chiefs learned that they don't like to lose. Next week we're gonna bring it. Till next time, see ya.
Could it be because of the other coaches watching your practice? Maybe the change in approach to the kids? It seems that the other teams are catching on somehow. I wonder how many coaches make the effort to watch other teams play, before their own match, to feel out the opposition.
