Hello everyone and welcome to yet another blog in coaching flag football.
Man what a game Today! I’m grateful to have played the Titans the week before the Redskins. By far, they were our most challenging team this season. They are the first team to score against us and really wake up the fighting spirit in the Mighty Chiefs and I hope that spirit spills over into next week’s game against the Redskins. Oh I forgot to mention that we won, 40 – 20. It was a great game and I gotta tell ya, the Titans have earned my respect.
The Chiefs are a slow starting team when it comes to offense (something that really must change quickly) and today’s game was no different. The Titans won the coin toss and opted to get the ball first, but we stopped them, and when it was our turn to play offense our kids acted as if they never saw the plays; yet again. I thought that this was gonna be a long game until the Titans got a safety on us and scored the first 2 points of the game. For the first time this season I thought that we might actually lose one, but at that point you can see how our team collectively just woke up and our offense was stopped only once after that.
Now the Titans came to win and at the first half’s end the score showed it with both teams tied at 14. However, when the second half began the game ended for the Titans as the Chiefs simply took both their offense and defense to the next level. I’m really proud of how our kids answered the call of our first true challenge this season. I wondered how they would react to getting scored on and they responded the way champions often do.
Next week is more then likely gonna be the hardest game of the season for us. The Eagles fell at the hands of the Redskins which leaves us and the Redskins the only undefeated teams in our division. Normally practice is geared to get our team to improve throughout the season, this week’s practices will be solely for the preparation of our next game and I’m sure the Redskins will be doing the same after realizing that we might be the only team to stop them.
Practice will be run differently this week. I’m gonna make sure that our kids can pull flags and I’m only gonna work on a few plays. I’m beginning to notice that when I coach the team as I did last season, we get better results. How am I to improve if the things I’m improving are back firing?
Once again I am grateful for our assistant coach, because he saw the opposing team’s weakness and I was able to exploit it. Without my assistant coach I truly am not sure if I could be as successful as I have been. All I can do now is learn as much as I can from him because I know that sooner or later, I’ll have to coach without him. I just hope it will be later than sooner.
This season I don’t want to be second to anyone, especially not to teams I’ve lost to before, such as the Redskins (last season). This week we will practice hard and next weekend we will either win or go down fighting. Until next time, see ya!
