winds of change

June 2006
nba draft 2006

Hey folks, another week another game of flag football.

As I mentioned last week, we were going to change things around. So this week we went right back to the drawing board getting rid of everything we had before and started all over again two weeks into the season.

This week we started with exercises and drills, then we split the offense and defense; oh did I mention that we now have set players on offense and defense? Well we do now. I took the offensive players and worked on some drills and maybe two new plays while the other coaches handled the defense.

On Friday’s practice we went longer with the kids doing serious drills like wind sprints, crabs, and the like. It was ugly as some of the kids started crying and everything. My heart went out to them, but we had to be tough. I finally got my roll back as the good guy though while the other coach played the bad guy during drills.

Now I had no idea what the defense coach was doing, I just completely gave him full reign on the D while I focused on Offense. On my end, I had to throw our whole playbook out the window and teach these kids new plays from scratch.

After running the offense we scrimmaged with the Defense and I was very excited to see that we are a totally different team then before. We have audible plays for both offense and defense and the kids responded to all the changes very well. In fact they responded better then expected.

I must admit coming into this week’s game I was not completely confident because we just totally flipped the script on the kids this week, so I wasn’t sure if they were going to respond the way we wanted them to during game time despite the fact that they did good the night before.

The game started off slow for us as the defense was not able to grab flags and get back to their position quick enough, while my QB was not looking at the field properly. The Patriots scored on their first possession and stopped our first run so it looked like not much changed for us at first, but we stuck to the game plan. At the end we won 31-6.

Three weeks into the season and the real 49ers have arrived. We still have a lot of work to do because we were very sloppy in a lot of areas for both offense and D, but this game was finally a step in the right direction. Hopefully the kids will take in this win and develop a true desire to keep winning. From here on in it’s all just repetition.

Now that we have our first win under our belt, lets see what the rest of the season has in store for us. Until next time, see ya!

Hey I wonder what the other coaches have to say about their teams. They should write a blog.

I've spread the word to the main guy running the league, so maybe we'll get some new bloggers by the end of the month.

I know you have set offensive and defensive players now but will they have an opportunity to learn the opposite side of the ball this season?
Xcitedmom on 10/23/2007 1:34:12 AM

Good question Xcitedmom.  One of the things that my assistant coach and I have wrestled about was were do some kids go in the lineup.  For example, our QB is probably the best receiver on the team, and one of our Defensive players has a much better arm.  The reason we picked the QB was because he had a better QB mind.  Obviously some of our kids can excel at both areas (Offense and Defense), but the main problem we had before was trying to teach them too much.  Now some kids are set at what they are doing (Some by thier own choice, other simply because they can't handle more), but as the season rolls along I would like to tweak the lineup a bit, but currently it would be much better for them to perfect what they are learning now.  I hope I've answered your question.  If you have more questions, please let me know.
